How to Find a Literary Agent: Practical Tips for Writers

For a lot of writers, getting a book deal with a traditional publisher is the big dream. But before that happens, there’s one big step necessary: you have to find a literary agent.

This part of the publishing journey can feel pretty intimidating. If you’re on this path, have you wondered: Where do I even start? How do I know which agents are right for me? What should I include in my query letter?

I got you! I recently shared a video on the WriterSpark YouTube channel that breaks down the process: Tips for Finding a Literary Agent.

Along with the tips (like why it’s essential to view your search as building a professional relationship rather than simply chasing a “yes.”), I share my own story about finding (and breaking up with) my first agent!

Why This Matters

The author–agent relationship is one of the most important partnerships you’ll form in your traditional publishing career. A good agent isn’t just someone who sells your current book. They really are an advocate for you. They’re your partner, so it’s so important to sign with the right one.

Next Steps

If you’re preparing to query, or even just starting to think about it, I encourage you to watch the full video here:

If you’ve already been querying, you may find a nugget of advice that helps you fine-tune your approach.

At WriterSpark, I believe every writer deserves the tools to navigate both the craft and the business side of publishing. Understanding how to find and connect with a literary agent is part of that big picture.
